ONE PATRON asks for an act of freedom. I am the person whose life that act would change.
I am Alexander List, an artist and writer. Before patronage, the work already exists in public: the Conditions of a Gift stories; the unresolved ENOCH record and its score; Relational Depth; Machine Scriptures; HERALD; and the protocols, signed records and verification system that hold the project to its terms.
These are neither commissions nor proof that I deserve more than anyone else. The request did not come before the work. I made and published the stories, structures and records through which ONE PATRON can be examined.
I cannot tell a patron what I would become with freedom. I can only show what I chose to make without it.
The work already exists before the act. What does not yet exist is the material freedom the act would create.
Freedom
Freedom would mean time to write and make art; to develop Enoch; to travel, rest and think slowly; and to decide for myself what comes next.
It would not be freedom from work. It would be freedom from having to promise the shape, usefulness or outcome of future work in advance.
A commission pays for an agreed result. An investment expects a return. ONE PATRON does neither. The patron purchases no future work, share of my life or claim on my decisions.
The unwritten future
The future remains deliberately unwritten. I may continue existing work, begin something unforeseen, change direction, move slowly, rest or stop.
None of these possibilities is owed. The uncertainty is part of the freedom. ONE PATRON may remain unfinished; its stories and records remain work made before the answer, not leverage used to obtain one.
No biography makes this request morally necessary. ONE PATRON does not rank my life or work above another. It asks whether one person freely wants to make freedom real for this particular person without turning it into ownership.
However large the qualifying gift, it creates no greater right to my time, attention, work, gratitude or future.
The patron does not fund a promised future. The patron makes an unpromised future possible.
